The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called Chi or Qi present in every living creature. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained. Once the flow of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness often occur.
Acupuncture is the use of painless, ultra-fine disposable needles which are inserted at specific points throughout the body to very precisely redirect the flow of Qi. There are over 360 acupoints located on the human body, each serving its own very specific function. Depending on the desired effect, different techniques can be used to stimulate, sedate, or regulate the flow of Qi. A typical session lasts anywhere from fifteen to forty minutes. There are occasions and conditions treated that require additional time depending on the desired outcome.
After a treatment, most patients feel relaxed and rejuvenated with partial or total relief of major symptoms being treated. Acupuncture works to decrease the body’s inflammatory response in order to allow it to operate in a more healthy and relaxed state.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the following as benefits to be gained by acupuncture treatment:
- Pain relief
- Increased energy
- Improved sleep quality
- Increased ability to relax
- Increased ability to focus and concentrate
- Improved memory
- Illness prevention and a strengthened immune system
- Enhanced physical performance
